In Progress

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

This past spring we finished up drawings for a house on Sailmaker Street on Daniel Island.  Since then, plans have been handed over to Steve Kendrick and his team at Structures Building Company, and construction is well under way.  Below are some photos documenting the progress so far:

August 2011

The footings have been dug and the rebar is in place.  It’s now time to pour the concrete for the footings and begin work on the foundation.

September 2011

By September, the framing is well under way, and the house is really starting to take shape.  Soon the front porch will be up and the framing of the attached garage will be complete.

October 2011

As you can see, by October most of the framing is complete.  Additionally, all of the windows have been installed.  The large wrap around porches are framed and ready for their beautiful columns to be installed.  The attached garage is completely framed as well.

November 2011

Our most recent trip to the site brought even more changes!  It may not look like much, but here’s what has been going on:  the front porch columns are now set, the stucco has been applied to the foundation and chimney, the house has been wrapped in protective felt,  and the exterior trim is beginning to be installed and painted.  It won’t be long before they start adding the siding.

It’s exciting to watch a house transform from an empty lot, to a design on paper, to an actual structure.  The house has massed out beautifully!  There is still a long way to go and there are many small details left to be added to this low country style house.  We’ll be back to share more in the coming weeks as we journey through the construction process.

Guest Posting

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

I was recently invited to write a guest post for Structures Building Company.  Here’s a short blurb of what I had to say:

“I have worked with Structures on three projects over the last 5 years. One was a major renovation and two were new construction. In all three cases, the team at Structures Building Company has done everything they can to build the best possible house and follow my design to the exact specifications. When they saw the opportunity for savings or improvements, they contacted me to discuss the options prior to making any changes.”

Check out my full post here on our experience working with Steve Kendrick and his team.

294 Furman Farm Place

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

In 2008 we designed a house for a couple that wanted to relocate to Charleston from New Jersey.  Actually, we design a lot of houses for people that are moving to Charleston from New Jersey.  Their new house is on Furman Farm Place on Daniel Island.  I recently, took a few pictures of it, and I thought I would share them.

Two gable features on the main mass break up the front facade to add visual interest

The massing of the house is not a big box.  One detail that breaks up the box is two wings off both ends of the main mass.  One mass is the garage with a mother-in-law suite on the second floor.  The other mass on the opposite side is the master bedroom.  Also, there are two gable features on the main mass.  This breaks up the front facade and creates additional visual interest.

Below are some features I thought were pretty important to the owners:

  1. A wrap around porch was important to the clients and it takes advantage of the golf course views across the street.
  2. We added a balcony off the mother-in-law suite that takes advantage of the views of a small park across the street.
  3. The masonry stairs and walkway that lead to the front porch are very inviting.  Additionally brick is another material that adds visual interest to the entrance.
  4. The massing of the garage was designed to look like an integral part of the house and not a garage that is merely attached to the house.
  5. The house is raised enough so the first floor is above the flood zone but there is still a connection between the porch and the pedestrian.
  6. There are a lot of tall windows that bring in natural light.

Another Satisfied Customer

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

A couple of weeks ago I shared a letter from one of our clients (read her letter here).  Well, I’m back to share another letter with you.  In the summer of 2008, we were hired to design this Italianate style house in Daniel Island Park:

The homeowners took some time between completing the design process and beginning the construction.  Their home was completed this spring, and I recently received the following letter:
