Before & After: Kiawah Island Residence

In 2008, I  was commissioned to redesign and update the façade of a small cottage on Kiawah Island overlooking the Kiawah River.  Additionally, the renovation was to include a new front porch, a mudroom with built-ins, and a new foyer.

Before

As you can see from the before photo, the house was lacking street presence and an inviting entrance.

After

I designed the new front porch to include exposed rafter tails, curved brackets to support the roof overhang, a bead board ceiling, and brick flooring and stairs. The new foyer was vaulted to create a spacious, yet proportionate main entry to the house, while directing views straight through the house to the river beyond. Additionally, the vaulting of the foyer mimics the vault of the front porch carrying the exterior design into the house.

In addition to renovations, I also designed several custom homes on Kiawah Island.  We have featured one of those homes on our website.  Click here to see it.

Before & After: New Hope Methodist Church

A couple of years ago, we were approached by members of New Hope Methodist Church to design a new entrance and steeple for their church.  New Hope is a very small church with only about 15 members located in Shulerville, SC.  This was a very fun project for us to take on.

Before

One of the reasons the members wanted to add a new entrance and steeple to their building was to make it look more like a church from the road.  Additionally, the members wanted a beautiful covered entrance for bridal processionals.

After

We designed the steeple to step up in height, to make the masses relate nicely to the existing building.  Additionally, the steeple and bell tower were used to create a new covered entrance.  The bell tower is open, not only from 4 sides at the top, but looking up from the bottom as well.  The double front doors were pulled out to be flush with the front wall to make them a more prominent feature of the entrance.
